A large male Edible Crab (or Brown Crab) Cancer pagurus, sitting out in the open on top of a reef. The male is identified by its heavy, massive claws which are significantly larger than those of the female. Once a crab reaches this size it has little to fear from predators and can wander about foraging with impunity. It will feed on carrion and by smashing up mussels and other shellfish.

They continue to moult throughout their lives and may therefore grow to a very large size. The largest edible crab on record was a male or ‘cock’ crab with a carapace width of 267mm, landed from the English Channel fishery. The Channel is known to produce exceptionally large male specimens of the edible crab.

Cancer pagurus is found in large numbers in scallop (Pecten maximus) beds (pers. obs.) which are commercially exploited by dredging. Cancer pagurus is often damaged or killed if struck by a dredge and annual mortality can be as much as 14% of the population (Bradshaw et al., 1999). Jenkins et al.
Results show that brown crab maturity is likely to occur at lower sizes than the current MLS in Scotland, implying that crabs may be able to reproduce at least once before being harvested. Based on the carapace width (CW) at which 50% of the sampled population was physiologically mature (CW50), estimates of size at first maturity varied between sampled populations in the range 97–117 mm CW in females and 59–106 mm CW in males. 3 Title: Reproductive traits and factors affecting the size at maturity of Cancer pagurus across 4 northern Europe 5 6 Authors 1(after first in alphabetical order): Jodie A. I do not know if it is an albino or whether juveniles are generally white. I had a bigger one in the aquarium (carapace width 6 cm or so), but every night the light went out it came out of its burrow and started to rearranging the tank, knocking big rocks against the glass.
